One of the yearly invention competitions that kids really get into is the Bubble Wrap Competition for Young Inventors. Out of 2500 entries to the fourth Bubble Wrap contest, Sealed Air, the inventor and manufacturer of Bubble Wrap, has announced 3 finalists and 12 semi-finalists in the 2009-2010 competition. The neat thing for kids and grownups is that you can make them yourselves!

The three finalists…

Smart Toilet, Finalist

MaryAnn Bulawa, a 14-year-old from Ava, NY, invented the Smart Toilet, a device that attaches to a toilet to help conserve energy and water.

Smart Toilet, 2009-2010 Bubble Wrap Competition finalist: by MaryAnn Bulawa

Fridge Guard, Finalist

The Fridge Guard was invented by Jared Mann, a 13-year old from Chistiansburg, VA. The Guard acts as a curtain that can be made for any refrigerator to help conserve energy.

Fridge Guard, 2009-2010 Bubble Wrap Competition finalist: by Jared Mann

Petri Bubbles, Finalist

Matthew Huber, a 13-year-old from St. Peter, MN, invented Petri Bubbles, a Bubble Wrap petri dish that offers a very inexpensive alternative to laboratory petri dishes.

Petri Bubbles, 2009-2010 Bubble Wrap Competition finalist: by Matthew Huber

The finalist inventions are very clever, but so are those of the semi-finalists! I would not like to have been a judge. Here’s just one of the 12 semi-finalists…

Bubble Debruiser, Semi-Finalist

Eric Baker, 11, from Longwood FL, invented the Bubble Debruiser to keep fruit from being bruised when it falls from a tree. He’s made a working model and a small-scale model of his invention.

Fruit Debruiser, 2009-2010 Bubble Wrap Competition semi-finalist: by Eric Baker

Fruit Debruiser, 2009-2010 Bubble Wrap Competition semi-finalist: by Eric Baker

The winner of the 2009-2010 Bubble Wrap Competition for Young Inventors will be announced on May 22, 2010 at an awards ceremony. The top prize is a $10,000 savings bond. The three finalists will all get a free 3-day trip to New York City, plus the second and third place winners will receive bond for $5,000 and $3,000 respectively.

Definitely check out the other very clever semi-finalist’s inventions. They may give you some ideas for DIY projects!

We received a very interesting tweet today suggesting that we take a look at Tap Tap Love. Tap Tap Love is a new game on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Tap Tap Love is exactly the same as a previously popular game in the App Store, that game was Bubble Wrap.

Bubble Wrap and Tap Tap Love are games in which the user just tries to pop as many bubble or hearts as possible in an alotted time. Currently Tap Tap Love is priced at $0.99 and Im really not too sure they are going to sell many copies, especially when I can get Bubble Wrap for FREE!

One of America’s most irresistible pop icons is turning 50 on Monday.

Bubble Wrap, the packing material that people love to burst, was born in a garage in Hawthorne, N.J., in 1960. Engineers Marc Chavannes and Al Fielding originally planned to market it as wallpaper.

The décor idea fell flat and Bubble Wrap – a proper name, like Kleenex, Band-Aid and Crock Pot, that has come to be improperly used as a generic term for any air-filled shipping material – was born. Its original name was Air Cap.

Each year, manufacturer Sealed Air says it makes enough Bubble Wrap to stretch from the Earth to the moon and back. And every day, people who come in contact with it can’t stop themselves from either popping it by hand, stomping on it or rolling over it in an office chair.

The sheer joy people derive from popping the bubbles has made Bubble Wrap a household name and pop phenomenon. Last year, Bubble Wrap was given a Facebook page that now has more than 2 million fans.

To honor the anniversary, the Sealed Air Corp. is declaring Monday Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day. The manufacturer also is making a limited run of golden Bubble Wrap.

Some of the quirkier uses people have found for Bubble Wrap include:

•Fruit protector – Place sheets of Bubble Wrap on the bottom of a refrigerator’s crisper compartment to protect fruit and vegetables from bruising. •Winterize pipes – Wrap pipes using Bubble Wrap and string or rubber bands to prevent freezing. •Windshield protector – Cover the glass with Bubble Wrap to prevent overnight ice buildup. •Camping tent buffer – Place a layer of Bubble Wrap on the ground before staking your tent. The layer will help block moisture and add a layer of padded comfort – not to mention a rude awakening when you roll over in your sleep. •Drink cozy – Use tape and Bubble Wrap to make a soda-”pop” can cozy that will keep your drink colder for longer. Athletic padding – Use it to protect knees, elbows or backsides when learning to skateboard, ski, bike or other fall-down activity. Down side – if you’re a klutz, everyone within earshot will know it.

Evolution has brought us many things, and five decades ago it brought us this. Shall we, Steve?

STEVE INSKEEP, host:

Oh please. Let’s go.

(Soundbite of bubble wrap popping)

INSKEEP: That’s the sound of bubble wrap, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a bang.

SHAPIRO: Bubble wrap’s manufacturer, Sealed Air Corporation, celebrates National Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day on the last Monday of every January.

INSKEEP: This year, the company is looking back to the time when two inventors developed this product in a small lab in New Jersey in the late 1950s.

SHAPIRO: They thought – no joke – they were creating a new kind of wallpaper. Then one of the investors looked out of an airplane window and noticed the way that the clouds seemed to cushion the plane during its descent.

INSKEEP: Now, of course, it is packaging as well as one of the favorite toys of my five-year-old.

SHAPIRO: And it has become a big part of pop culture. On this 50th birthday, we can tell you that more than 250 Facebook pages are dedicated to bubble wrap.

INSKEEP: All right.

(Soundbite of bubble wrap popping)

(Soundbite of music)

SHAPIRO: This is NPR News.

People have walked to the altar dressed in it, protected their garden plants with it, even put it on display at highbrow art museums.

Mostly, they like the sound it makes when they destroy it, piece by piece, which largely explains the appeal of Bubble Wrap, the stress reducer disguised as package cushioning that maintains an inexplicable hold on pop culture.

The product once envisioned as a new type of wallpaper turns 50 this month, and enthusiasts’ obsession with it has spawned more than 250 Facebook pages devoted to Bubble Wrap.

Ken Aurichio, communications director for Sealed Air, the Elmwood Park-based company that manufactures Bubble Wrap, thought he’d witnessed every form of Bubble Wrap mania until he received a wedding invitation last year from a woman in Ohio who said she would wear the product on her trip down the aisle.

“I’d never, never met her before,” Aurichio said. “She must have gotten my name off the Web site.” (No, he didn’t attend.)

Like many innovations, Bubble Wrap initially was conceived for an entirely different purpose. According to Aurichio, a New York City designer approached inventors Marc Chavannes and Al Fielding in the late 1950s with a proposal for creating textured wallpaper.

That idea stalled, but the product the two men had created in a small lab in New Jersey found its niche when, according to company lore, Fielding was flying into Newark Airport and noticed the fluffy clouds that seemed to cushion the plane’s descent.

Fifty years later, Sealed Air has global revenues of more than $4 billion and legions of fans who have come up with myriad uses for Bubble Wrap (It’s a wig! It’s a mobile home! It’s a sleeping bag! It’s a flotation device!).

“It seems like every day there’s something new,” said Rohn Shellenberger, the company’s business manager for air cellular products.

Sealed Air’s 100,000-square-foot warehouse, just off Interstate 80 about 15 miles west of Manhattan, is an obsessive-compulsive’s dream, with row upon row of stacked rolls of Bubble Wrap as big as seven feet in diameter.

The temperature is sweat-inducing, caused by the machines that process millions of granules of resin (one box is labeled “Munchy Resin”) into clear plastic sheets at temperatures up to 560 degrees.

Shellenberger pops one myth about Bubble Wrap; namely, that air is injected into all those tiny bubbles. Instead, it is trapped between the sheets after they pass over several rollers, one of which creates the indentations for the bubbles.

Two apparently disparate forces conspired to shape Bubble Wrap’s growth: The advent of the transistor — and later the personal computer with all its accessories — which made the shipping of delicate electronic components a multibillion-dollar industry; and the Internet, which provided a forum for fanatics to swap stories and cement Bubble Wrap as a cultural icon.

Katherine Howard, a Massachusetts artist, tied Bubble Wrap bows to the chairs for her wedding last May and had guests participate in a popping contest. Not surprising for a woman who put up a virtual Bubble Wrap site in 1996 and is known as the Web’s unofficial “Bubble Wrap Lady.”

“We tried to find the most useless thing we could put on the Internet, and Bubble Wrap is a completely tactile experience,” Howard said with a chuckle. “But it’s something that everybody enjoys.”

It’s difficult to imagine Chavannes and Fielding, both now deceased, having any inkling that their invention would inspire such silliness or find its way into movies (Wall-E, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective), television (Monk) and high culture (Museum of Modern Art exhibit, 2009).

Then there’s the true badge of hipness (for now, at least): A bubble-popping application for Apple’s iPhone.

ELMWOOD PARK, N.J., Jan 25, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) –

–$1.35 Earnings per Share or $1.44 Adjusted Earnings per Share for Full Year

–Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2009 Highlights

–6% sequential sales growth in the quarter, including 2% due to foreign exchange

–”BRIC” sales increased 18% in the quarter, including 6% due to foreign exchange

–Marketing, administrative and development expenses as percent of net sales higher in the quarter due to incentive compensation expense

–Full year gross margin increased 320 basis points to 28.7%

–Full year operating margin increased 340 basis points to 11.6%

–Full year record free cash flow of $500 million

For full year 2009, Sealed Air Corporation (NYSE: SEE | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) reported diluted earnings per common share (EPS) of $1.35, compared with $0.99 in 2008. Adjusted EPS was $1.44, compared with $1.40 in 2008. (See attached supplements for non-GAAP reconciliations and information.) Sales declined 12% to $4.24 billion primarily reflecting 8% lower volumes and 5% unfavorable foreign exchange.

Fourth quarter 2009 EPS was $0.37, compared with $0.26 in 2008. Adjusted EPS was $0.40, compared with $0.39 in 2008. Sales declined 2% to $1.15 billion reflecting a 4% decrease in volumes and a 2% decrease in price/mix, partially offset by 4% favorable foreign exchange. Volumes were primarily impacted by reduced equipment sales in Food Packaging, while lower prices on select products, primarily in Protective Packaging, impacted price/mix. Sequential sales increased 6%, including 2% of foreign exchange.

Commenting on our operating performance, William V. Hickey, President and Chief Executive Officer, stated:

“Looking back at 2009, we are encouraged with the sequential improvement in sales even though our end markets have yet to break into positive year-over-year growth rates. Lower input costs combined with aggressive cost savings programs and price/mix management yielded strong margin growth. We maintained a balanced approach during the year by continuing to invest in innovation, launching over 25 new, distinct solutions, adding new customers, and returning cash to shareholders through $76 million of dividend payments. We did this while generating record free cash flow of $500 million, which positions us extremely well to meet near term obligations and focus on growth. We want to particularly recognize and thank Sealed Air employees around the world for their hard work and sacrifice to rise to the challenges of the difficult economic environment in 2009.”

Full year gross margin increased 320 basis points (bps) to 28.7%. Operating margin increased 340 bps to 11.6%. Excluding $17 million in charges related to GMS and our cost reduction programs, the 2009 operating margin was 12.0%. This compares with 10.1% in 2008, which excludes $93 million of comparable charges. These 2009 margin increases reflect an estimated $200 million reduction in resin costs and approximately $80 million in benefits from GMS and cost reduction programs.

Fourth quarter gross margin increased 280 bps to 29.1%. Operating margin increased 100 bps to 10.8%. Excluding $9 million in charges related to GMS and our cost reduction programs, the 2009 operating margin was 11.6%. This compares with 11.7% in 2008, which excludes $23 million of comparable charges. These 2009 margin results reflect an estimated $20 million reduction in resin costs and approximately $10 million in benefits from GMS and cost reduction programs.

Operating profit was impacted by higher marketing, administrative and development expenses. Provisions for total company incentive compensation expenses increased $30 million in the quarter and $60 million for full year 2009 as compared to 2008. This incentive compensation includes annual cash incentives, annual profit sharing, and long-term, share-based awards. Of the 2009 amounts, $15 million in the quarter and $24 million in the year were for non-cash, long-term, share-based compensation vesting in 2011 and 2012 that recognizes the achievement of performance results that are aligned with strategic goals. The $15 million in the fourth quarter reflects full year results that exceeded 2009 performance goals.

Fourth Quarter Segment Review

The following net sales discussions exclude the impact of currency translation, which we refer to on a “constant dollar basis.” The attached financial statements present results in accordance with U.S. GAAP and the “Components of Change in Net Sales” section provides further details on the impact of currency translation.

In the following segment discussions, the 2009 fourth quarter operating profit includes the impact of the higher incentive compensation expenses that were discussed above, which are allocated to the segments for reporting purposes.

Food Packaging Segment

Sales decreased 4% on a constant dollar basis, principally reflecting 3% lower volumes related primarily to equipment sales in Europe. Sequential sales increased 9%, including 3% of foreign exchange. This increase reflects seasonality in the holiday period and increased demand for our products.

Operating profit was flat at $67 million while the operating margin was 13.3% compared with 13.4% in 2008.

Food Solutions Segment

Sales decreased 6% on a constant dollar basis, reflecting 5% lower volumes and 1% lower price/mix. Volumes in North America were primarily impacted by lower sales in the food service sector. Sequential sales increased 3%, which was largely attributable to foreign exchange.

Operating profit was $19 million with an operating margin of 8.2%. This compares with $28 million, or 11.7% in 2008.

Protective Packaging Segment

Sales decreased 7% on a constant dollar basis, reflecting 4% lower price/mix and 3% lower volumes. Volumes were negatively impacted by the economic conditions in North America and Europe. The lower price/mix is a result of lower prices on select products. Sequential sales increased 6%, including 2% of foreign exchange. This increase reflects a modest seasonal up tick due to the holiday shopping season.

Operating profit was $42 million with an operating margin of 12.9%. This compares with $39 million, or 11.5% in 2008.

Other Category

Sales decreased 13% on a constant dollar basis, primarily reflecting 6% lower price/mix and 5% lower volume. The decline in price/mix primarily reflects the mix of customized packaging solutions in our medical applications business. Volumes were negatively impacted in our specialty materials business due to economic conditions in North America and Europe. Sequential sales increased 1%, which was largely attributable to foreign exchange.

Operating profit was $1 million with an operating margin of 1.7%. This compares with $2 million, or 1.8% in 2008.

Global Manufacturing Strategy (GMS)

We recognized a charge of $8 million in the fourth quarter, of which $5 million is a restructuring charge related to ceasing certain operations at one of our German locations. We anticipate an additional $4 million of associated costs through mid-2010 to complete the project, marking the completion of projects related to GMS.

Financing Transactions

In November, we entered into a 150 million euro senior unsecured revolving credit facility due July 2012 (U.S. dollar equivalent at December 31, 2009 of $214 million). Shortly thereafter, we canceled our ANZ facility valued at Australian dollar 170 million (U.S. dollar equivalent at November 30, 2009 of $156 million).

Goodwill Analysis

We are currently completing our annual goodwill impairment analysis in accordance with accounting standards. This analysis is used to determine whether there might be a non-cash impairment of goodwill for the quarter and year ended December 31, 2009. An update on this analysis will be discussed in our upcoming Form 10-K.

2010 Outlook and Earnings Guidance

Commenting on our outlook, Mr. Hickey stated:

“As we celebrate Sealed Air’s 50th anniversary, we are transitioning into 2010 with good momentum. After a significant commitment in recent years to reduce our cost structure and align our business for growth in developing regions, we believe we are well positioned to capture the opportunities that lie ahead. We are focusing on new products and technology platforms and are pursuing new opportunities in new market applications. While many of our end markets continue to show some weakness today, we are anticipating a modest recovery and an average constant dollar sales growth of 4-6% in 2010. We expect this growth to be led by a double-digit percent sales increase in our extensive developing region footprint.”

Presently, we are assuming a mid-single digit percent increase in resin prices largely driven by North American commodity-class resins. We will be closely monitoring any resin cost changes and will prudently manage those situations as they arise. For foreign currency translation, we have assumed the U.S. dollar averages $1.43 per euro in 2010. In addition, we are targeting operating expenses to be at 16-17% of net sales. We are assuming a full year effective tax rate of 27.0% and capital expenditures are estimated to be $80 to $100 million. We are estimating depreciation and amortization to be $155 million and are assuming approximately $40 million for non-cash, long-term, share-based compensation. Free cash flow is expected to exceed $300 million for the full year 2010.

As a result, we anticipate full year 2010 EPS to be in the range of $1.48 to $1.68, or $1.50 to $1.70 on an adjusted basis, excluding a $0.02 charge related to the remaining portion of GMS. The pace of volume recovery and price/mix are the determining factors in the range. This guidance assumes an incremental $10 million of benefits from our GMS program in 2010, bringing the full annual estimated benefit run rate to $55 million. Our guidance does not factor in the payment of the W. R. Grace settlement as the exact timing of the settlement is unknown. Our guidance also excludes any foreign exchange losses that may be recognized in 2010 related to the recent currency devaluation in Venezuela.

Business

For fifty years, Sealed Air has been a leading global innovator and manufacturer of a wide range of packaging and performance-based materials and equipment systems that now serve an array of food, industrial, medical, and consumer applications. Operating in 52 countries, Sealed Air’s international reach generated revenue of $4.2 billion in 2009. With widely recognized brands such as Bubble Wrap(R) brand cushioning, Jiffy(R) protective mailers, Instapak(R) foam-in-place systems and Cryovac(R) packaging technology, Sealed Air continues to identify new trends, foster new markets, and deliver innovative solutions to its customers. For more information about Sealed Air, please visit the Company’s web site at www.sealedair.com.

Non-U.S. GAAP Information

In this press release, we have included several non-GAAP financial measures, including adjusted EPS, adjusted 2010 EPS guidance, free cash flow, operating margin excluding charges, and a number of items where we say “excluding foreign exchange.” We present results and guidance, adjusted to eliminate the effects of specified items that would otherwise be included under U.S. GAAP, to aid in comparisons with other periods or prior guidance. We may use EPS and growth in net sales to determine performance-based compensation. Our management uses financial measures, excluding the effects of currency translation, in evaluating operating performance. Thus, management believes that this information may be useful to investors. For important information on our use of non-GAAP financial measures, see the attached supplementary information entitled “Reconciliation of Diluted Net Earnings per Common Share,” “Free Cash Flow,” “Reconciliation of Net Earnings Available to Common Stockholders to EBIT, EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA” and “Components of Change in Net Sales.”

Forward-Looking Statements

Sealed Air has provided certain forward-looking statements in this press release such as those in the Outlook section above. Forward-looking statements can be identified by such words as “anticipates,” “expects,” “will” and similar expressions. A variety of factors may cause actual results to differ materially from these expectations, including: economic conditions affecting packaging utilization; changes in raw material costs; currency translation and devaluation effects; non-cash impairment of goodwill, and legal proceedings. For more extensive information, see “Risk Factors” and “Cautionary Notice Regarding Forward-Looking Statements,” which appear in our most recent Annual Report on Form 10-K as revised and updated by our Forms 10-Q and 8-K, as filed with the SEC.

(1) On January 1, 2009, we adopted a new accounting

standard requiring non-vested share-based payment awards that

contain non-forfeitable rights to dividends to be treated as

participating securities and therefore included in computing

earnings per common share using the two-class method. The two-class

method is an earnings allocation formula that calculates basic and

diluted net earnings per common share for each class of common stock

separately based on dividends declared and participation rights in

undistributed earnings. The non-vested restricted stock issued under

our 2005 Contingent Stock Plan are considered participating

securities since these securities have non-forfeitable rights to

dividends when we declare a dividend during the contractual period

of the share-based payment award.

When calculating diluted net earnings per common share, the more

dilutive effect of applying either of the following is presented:

(a) the two-class method assuming that the participating security is

not exercised or converted, or, (b) the treasury stock method for

the participating security. Our diluted net earnings per common

share above were calculated using the two-class method since such

method was more dilutive.

The calculations of basic and diluted net earnings per common share

for 2008 have been adjusted to reflect this change and this

adjustment did not have a material impact.

(2) On July 20, 2009, we redeemed all of our 3%

Convertible Senior Notes.

(3) Provides for the following items if their inclusion

is dilutive: (1) the effect of assumed issuance of 18 million shares

of common stock reserved for the Settlement agreement, (2) the

effect of conversion of our 3% Convertible Senior Notes due June

2033 and (3) the effect of non-vested restricted stock units using

the treasury stock method.

“Never judge by a book by its cover”, we have often heard these words of words wisdom. But think carefully, the first impression we get of a product is inevitably its packing isn’t it? After all this is expected since the first thing we see is the packaging! Thus, it is very important for suppliers and marketers of products to choose the proper packing to enhance the image and value of the products to secure a premium price as well. Imaging aside, product packaging is a vital part of your product delivery and value chain as it acts as the vehicle for the product to reach the hands of the final customer. This is critical as improper packaging, be it in size or material leaves a good chance for the product to get damaged or contaminated. Thus specialist packaging such as foam lined boxes for fragile items to cardboard tubes and doubled walled cardboard boxes providing more support for the heavier or larger products are available on the market according to your choice.

It isn’t easy deciding on packaging, in fact it is one of the most carefully thought about decisions management makes, as the cost of packaging is a direct cost and (quite commonly) constitutes an appreciable proportion of the total product cost. So the dilemma is how to find a high quality and cost effective post and packing system which caters to your specific needs. So how do we decide where to buy post and packaging, specially for commercial purposes? As this is a market with a large number of potential sellers, the high quality ones need to be filtered out from a gamut of options. Thus the availability of information is an important deciding factor. So the internet is a very good place to start as it is extremely transparent about the full range of products on offer and the prices they are available at. Further a lot of suppliers offer tailored services when it comes to packing supplies, these details are also commonly available online, or they entertain requests for information with regards to their products. So you can peruse through the complete range of options available to you before a decision is made. This process is facilitated by internet firms offering packaging supplies.

Online packaging supply firms have increased in number with the need for tailor made commercial post and packaging has booming in the recent past as e-bay sellers and various small firms have begun offering their products (sometimes exclusively) online. The commonly sought after types of packaging products and accessories include Packing Boxes, Kraft Paper Rolls, Silica Gel Packs, Telescopic Boxes, Sealed Air Bubble Wrap, Aircap Bubble Wrap, Mail Lite Padded Envelopes and Polythene Bags. Some (or most) of these products are, although commonplace, specialized for the products they are designed to pack. Thus it is important for companies to select a supplier that is quick on the delivery, is easy to contact, and is tailored to your specific needs. What better than to select an online packaging supplier? There are high quality websites offering a whole range of products for very reasonable prices. And the best part is, most of these products are tailor made to your exact specifications. Most sites offer free guidance on selecting the optimum packaging solution for you as well. Thus your needs for high quality packaging and postage accessories can be met at a reasonable rate without spending much time and effort searching out a shop!
